The Producers Guild of America announced the nominees in the television series and non-fiction television categories for the 21st Annual PGA Awards.
While the nominees are largely a familiar and traditional lot, without a single new Fall 2009 drama or comedy on the list, the PGA did manage to recognize a few fresh names, including HBO's "True Blood" in the drama category.
The Norman Felton Producer of the Year Award in Episodic Television - Drama nods are led by last year's winner, AMC's "Mad Men," while ABC's "Lost" and "Dexter" are also repeat nominees. Coming off a second season in which it broke ratings records seemingly every week, "True Blood" is new to the field, as is "Breaking Bad," stablemate to "Mad Men" at AMC.
Last year's winner "30 Rock" leads the pack of nominees for the Danny Thomas Producer of the Year Award in Episodic Television - Comedy. As with last year, "30 Rock" will be competing against NBC's "The Office," HBO's "Entourage" and Showtime's "Weeds." The category's only new nominee is Showtime's "Californication."
The two non-fiction categories are also near carbon copies. PGA Producer of the Year Award in Non-Fiction Television "60 Minutes" will have to go against "Deadliest Catch," "This American Life" and "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List," with A&E's "Intervention" as the only fresh face.
And in the race for PGA Producer of the Year Award in Live Entertainment and Competition Television, "The Colbert Report" will try to repeat against returning nominees "The Amazing Race," "Project Runway" and "Top Chef," plus "fresh" nominee "American Idol."
Nominations for PGA Awards in the Theatrical Motion Picture and Longform Television categories will be announced on January 5, 2010, along with the individual producers in all categories. The winners will be announced on January 24.
