Casting negative reviews aside, Michael Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" had a history making opening day taking a mammoth $60.6 million at the box office, according to Variety.

Breaking the single day take for a film opening on a Wednesday, "Revenge of the Fallen" surpassed "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" which grossed $44.2 million on July 11, 2007.  The single day record still belongs to "The Dark Knight" which grossed an astounding $67.1 million last July 18.  Additionally, the total is below "Spider-Man 3's" debut which made $59.8 million on May 4, 2007.

As previously reported, part of "Revenge of the Fallen's" strong gross came from $16 million in midnight shows, a much larger number than studio Paramount Pictures expected.

"Fallen" is expected to dominate the box office for the next five days, but the question is whether it can surpass "Dark Knight's" 3-day gross record of $158 million and its 5-day gross record of $182.9 million.

Whatever "Fallen" accomplishes, its records may not last long.  "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" also opens on a Wednesday, this July 15.
