The CW has ordered a backdoor pilot for a possible spin-off to the second-year drama "Gossip Girl."

News of the spinoff first broke on Zap2it on Wednesday afternoon, followed by additional information courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter.

Apparently series developers/executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are developing a flashback-driven "Gossip Gir l" for the show's March 11 episode.

The flashbacks will introduce the wild teenage years of Lily Rhodes, now best known as Kelly Rutherford's Lily van der Woodsen [Bass]. The story will focus on Lily's introduction into Los Angeles' Hollywood lifestyle in the 1980s after she has to leave her Montecito boarding school to move in with her sister in The Valley.

Casting on the episode is currently underway. Mark Piznarski, who directed the "Gossip Girl" and "90210" pilots for The CW will direct the episode.

The trades had previously reported the possibility of a "Gossip Girl" spinoff generated through Alloy Entertainment, which produces the "Gossip Girl" books. Instead, Schwartz and Savage opted to work on an original idea, one that won't require plucking a member from the drama's established cast.
