Sunny Day Real Estate reunites, sets tour dates
Seminal emo band takes advantage of Foo Fighters down-time

The march of the '90s band reunions continues, this time with a band that is re-reuniting.
Sunny Day Real Estate, considered one of the seminal bands in the emo genre, is regrouping with all four original members and are going on tour this fall.
On Sept. 15, Sub Pop will be reissuing the band's debut "Diary" (1994) and "LP2" (1995), the latter of which was released even after the band broke up for the first time, due to internal conflicts. Drummer William Goldsmith and bassist Nate Mendel were tapped to play in Foo Fighters and frontman Jeremy Enigk started off his solo career with 1996's "Return Of The Frog Queen."
Three-quarters of the group (sans Mendel) re-united to fulfill label contractual obligations in 1997 and actually found it fruitful, crafting two other albums "How It Feels to Be Something On" (1998) and "The Rising Tide" (2000).
"I wasn't around for the second version of the band that recorded the 3rd and 4th albums, so I've always had a feeling of unfinished business there," Mendel says in a statement. "We had all these outsized ideas back then, 'Everyone's going to learn a new instrument,' and 'Let's do a rock opera,' but before we could get anywhere with them, the band broke up. We left behind all these weird and beautiful songs, though, and they've stuck with me all this time. I'm really happy that we get a chance to play them together again."
The re-mastered re-issues will feature bonus tracks and new liner notes, to hit shelves on CD as well as vinyl.
The tour kicks off in Vancouver on Sept. 17, two days after the re-releases, and continues through Oct. 16 in the band's and label's hometown, Seattle. No word if the group will be premiering new material or if any is being made at all, but undoubtably ten years is long enough for the crew to have a few ideas rolling around in their heads.
As for Foo Fighters, Goldsmith left that band in 1996 after a recording tiff with frontman and former Nirvana drummer Grohl. Mendel has continued on, but Grohl announced in the fall last year that the band was going to step away from making music together for a while. ""We've never really taken a long break, I think it's time," he told BBC Radio 1.
