Neil Flynn may be ready to step up from janitor to leading man.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the trusty "Scrubs" character actor has signed on to star opposite Patricia Heaton on ABC's comedy pilot "The Middle."

Set up at Warner Bros. TV, the pilot focuses on a middle-class couple (Heaton and Flynn) raising three kids in Middle America.

The trade paper reported the news of Flynn's casting on the same night "Scrubs" made its ABC premiere, launching its eighth season after spending the first seven on NBC.

This will presumably cause fans to wonder either what the move says about ABC's faith in "Scrubs" or about the future of Flynn's Janitor on the comedy.

We, alas, have no answers.

Flynn was most recently seen in a small role in the summer smash "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." Other credits include parts in "Mean Girls" and his turn as Transit Cop in "The Fugitive."
