Our 'Idol' favorite is still loving Haley and Casey, together and solo
Haley Reinhart performed on Wednesday (April 27) night's American Idol.
Season 6 favorite Melinda Doolittle is one of the experts in HitFix's Fantasy American Idol game and throughout the competition, she'll be providing analysis on this season's contenders.

Carole King is my hero! When you can write song so well that anyone sounds good singing them, you automatically achieve hero status. Wow! This was an amazing night on Idol. At this point, it's anybody's game. I loved the feedback that Jimmy Iovine and Babyface gave the contestants this week. I think they are really taking time to bring out the artistry (as Kara DioGuardi would say) in each contestant. So here are my thoughts about each contestant tonight. I've put them in order from most favorite to least favorite. I even critiqued the duets. Well...most of them. :-) Let me know if you agree.Â

April 28, 2011 at 2:21PM EST Reply to CommentMelinda! You are so great yourself..I would have loved to hear you on a Carole King night. As it turned out, I enjoyed all of the performances, and I think, in the same order that you've posted, too. I love the richness and texture of Lauren's voice, I wish she would just cut loose and SING, dammit! Haley has definitely won me over..her performances have simply improved every week, AND she's perfectly adorable, too. Casey is my favorite male up there. He is really the best showman. I would love to see him in concert, but I think..never mind..I was about to say a smaller venue, a more intimate setting would be the best, but, as I think about it, he could please in any setting.
James was very entertaining last night, as always. He is so over the top in any given performance, but, I fear, he has yet to dig deep enough to project true originality in his performances.

April 28, 2011 at 3:16PM EST Reply to CommentMelinda, love your recap. Haley is the best. As for James and Adam, well Adam was a great vocalist even in his early twenties as you can see by some of his earlier works. But James is pretty good in his own right.

April 28, 2011 at 3:36PM EST Reply to CommentI agree that James is not a strong vocalist and his voice gets away from him. Not something I would want to listen to live. Auto tune the heck out of him and maybe he might be ok.

April 28, 2011 at 6:16PM EST Reply to CommentI think you should be a judge next year! You're not afraid to criticize, but it always comes from a constructive, caring place. The judges could definitely learn from you! :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
April 28, 2011 at 6:19PM EST Reply to CommentThank you Melinda for taking the time to review the Idol performances. I so respect your opinions and love to read your commentaries.
p.s. I was so upset when you got voted off, that I didn't watch the show for two years. Really

April 28, 2011 at 6:45PM EST Reply to CommentGreat review! Love reading you take on the contestants. I am also a big fan of Casey and Haley.IA--Casey is so talented--just dial back a little of the growling. He is like an actor though--and so fun to watch. I know the producers are pushing for a James/Scottie/Lauren top 3--I hope Haley and Casey can thwart their evil plans--LOL!

April 28, 2011 at 7:25PM EST Reply to CommentGreat critique Melinda. You are spot on in most respects and would probably make a fantastic judge on a show where judging it seems, has become obsolete.
Also to see the vocal control Lambert had at Durbin's age check out "adam lambert brigadoon" on Youtube. I think you'll like it a lot.

April 28, 2011 at 7:53PM EST Reply to CommentFact: Adam Lambert already has that uncanny control over his voice when he's at Durbin's age. Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJYyqzUr6jU

April 28, 2011 at 9:27PM EST Reply to CommentMelinda, great remarks. But being a big Adam fan, Adam had enormous control & range even in his early 20's & maybe before that but we don't have any audio. His control during his 2003 Hair tour singing "my conviction" is just awesome. James will never have that & probably doesn't care. He plans to be some kind of rocker, prob with a band. Don't have any faves this season, just like last season. I think Scotty will win tho, he has those southern/country voters who just luuurves a one dimensional, no range singer! And they sure do know how to vote & buy physical cd's! LOL!

1. James
2. Haley
3. Casey
4. Lauren
5. Scotty
6. Jacob
However, my particular favorite -- and I base this on whose music would I pay to download on my iPod -- is Haley. I wouldn't download any of the rest, except for a one-off here and there.
Jacob has been my least favorite from the beginning, though I recognize he does have some pipes. Just don't like his musical "style."
