AMC announced on Monday (May 4) that the third season of "Mad Men" has begun production in Los Angeles.

The cable network would only say that Season Three is set to premiere in August, though some media reports were speculating on an unconfirmed Aug. 16 launch date.

As recently as January, the show's third season appeared to be in jeopardy, or at least the participation of series creator and acknowledged mastermind Matthew Weiner appeared to be in jeopardy. Weiner reached an extensive new pact with Lionsgate Television in mid-January, allowing the writers to reconvene and begin breaking stories.

Also returning for the show's third run are stars Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, January Jones and Christina Hendricks, plus guest star John Slattery and one of TV's deepest supporting casts.

"Mad Men" has won the past two Golden Globes for Best Television Series - Drama and also took its first Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series last fall.
