It's been a hard, long grueling run, folks, it's been a sad, itchy half-year of enduring week after week of Black Eyed Peas jigging on the top of The Billboard Hot 100, with "I Gotta Feeling" and "Boom Boom Pow." But we can happily report it's over now, people, at ease -- we have Jay Sean's "Down" featuring Lil Wayne.
"Jay Who?," you may be asking? Oh, he's the voice behind hits "Dance with You (Nachna Tere Naal)," "Eyes on You" and "Stolen." Still not ringing a bell?
In a lot of ways, it's so rare for British pop sensations, regardless of notoriety overseas, to make it as big over on these shores -- just look at Robbie Williams or the Sugababes. It took Muse years and years. Kanye West is still trying to break Mr Hudson. But Jay Sean has done it now, to some degree, and it was with the endorsement of Lil Wayne, a collaborator and label daddy at Cash Money.
The videographers of "Down" pretty much nailed what anybody ever wants to see anyway -- dancing -- and the song rings nostalgic of the boy band days of yore. It's no new formula, but it's a relief, too, to see new blood on top of the radio and singles sales chart, after "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling" dominated for 26 weeks straight, 12 and 14 weeks respectively.
It's also rare to see anybody of Indian/Punjabi descent at the top. Would love to throw a fun fact of who was the last or latest... but none come to mind.
But somebody better call Jay-Z: auto-tune is most definitely not dead. And Lil Wayne will never not be one ugly looking man.
"Down" was initially released wide to radio in June, with the single going on sale late in the month.
What do you think of this track? Is it a good replacement for the Black Eyed Peas, or could anybody have achieved as much?
