'Harry Potter' and Katy Perry top People's Choice nominations
'Glee' and Beyonce also rank high
'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2'
The nearly surprise-free 2012 People's Choice nominations have been announced, with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" leading the pack with nine nominations, four of which came from the "Favorite Movie Star Under 25" category (Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton each received a nod there). In the music and TV categories the top vote-getters were pop star Katy Perry (up for awards across all three mediums) with seven and the Fox musical "Glee", also with seven.
The nominations were announced today at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills, with Elisha Cuthbert ("Happy Endings"), Julianne Hough ("Footloose"), Joe Jonas, Jennifer Morrison ("Once Upon a Time") Sharon Osbourne ("The Talk"), Busy Philipps ("Cougar Town") and "The Big Bang Theory"'s Kaley Cuoco (also serving as host of the awards show) doing the honors.
While the top vote-getters here were practically a foregone conclusion (they always are with this thing, given that the nominees are based on popularity rather than artistic achievement), there were at least a few mild surprises outside of that, including:
a) Chris Brown being nominated for "Favorite R&B Artist" despite the erratic behavior he's exhibited this past year, including that violent outburst at the "Good Morning America" studios back in March after he became angry with anchor Robin Robert's questions concerning his brutal 2009 assault of ex-girlfriend Rihanna. Of course, solid first-week sales of Brown's last album "F.A.M.E." was the first indicator of many music fans' willingness to look past the hot-headed hip-hop artist's overwhelming narcissism and potentially dangerous temper - which is too bad.
b) Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks' nods for "Favorite Movie Actress" and "Favorite Movie Icon", respectively, despite the fact that "Larry Crowne" received little love from audiences this summer (ditto Ryan Reynolds, whose two features this year - "Green Lantern" and "The Change-Up" - proved to be major flops).
c) Chloe Moretz scoring a nod for "Favorite Movie Star Under 25" even though her big film this year, Martin Scorsese's "Hugo", doesn't hit theaters until Thanksgiving weekend.
d) Nina Dobrev being nominated for "Favorite TV Drama Actress" for "The Vampire Diaries" - apparently the result of an overwhelming number of write-in votes (the People's Choice organization normally pre-determines the acts/films/TV shows that are eligible for a nomination) from fans of the show. So, you know, good for her.
e) Kim Kardashian receiving a nomination for "Favorite Celebreality TV Star". Oops!
f) "Whitney" for "Favorite New TV Comedy"? Really?
Voting begins today in all 43 categories, the nominees of which were previously determined by over 40 million votes. You can hit up the show's official website or Facebook page to cast your picks for the winners, or tweet them using specific hashtags (you can check out a full list of them here). Voting ends December 6th (save for "Favorite New TV Comedy" and "Favorite New TV Drama", which will remain open until the night the show airs).
The 2012 People's Choice Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theater, L.A. Live on Wednesday, January 11th at 9 PM on CBS. You can check out the full list of nominees below:
