Flaming Lips announce new album
'Embryonic' will feature members of MGMT, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Flaming Lips
The Flaming Lips will release they're newest egg, "Embryonic," to the universe in September. Fans eager for a sneak peak may be able to get a glimpse merely by purchasing tickets to an upcoming show, as ticket-buyers for select dates will be treated to a free EP with three songs from the double-disc set: "Convinced of the Hex," "The Impulse" and "Silver Trembling Hands."
As was revealed to German blog Die Klangschau, The Lips tapped Yeah Yeah Yeah's Karen O and pop duo MGMT for guest spots. "A double record offers more room to be strange," promised frontman Wayne Coyne. Goodie. From various reports already, the new tracks are wacky and jam-oriented.
"Some of my favorite records - thinking Beatles 'White Album,' Zeppelin's 'Physical Graffiti' and even some of the longer things that the Clash have done - part of the reason I like them is that they're not focused. They're kind of like a free-for-all and go everywhere," Coyne told Billboard about the new set. "It's not necessarily because we're prolific, I think we always stay in a sort of perpetual panic of like we never have more songs than we need and we always wonder if any of them are any good to begin with. I do think we probably work best in a panic, so maybe it's best that I planned it this way."
"Embryonic" is the follow-up to the Lips' 2006 "At War With The Mystics." The group also released long-awaited low-budget indie film "Christmas On Mars" in November last year.
The Flaming Lips will be supporting Coldplay for a number of dates abroad later on this summer. Below are their U.S. tour dates, including their stops at the Pitchfork Music Festival and All Tomorrow's Parties.
