"Married with Children" star Ed O'Neill may be ready to get back into the comedy game.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, O'Neill has been cast in ABC's ensemble sitcom pilot "An American Family," from 20th Century Fox TV.

"An American Family" is a single-camera comedy (ABC never gives up) abou t three very different families. One is a "traditional" family. One includes a 60-year-old man (O'Neill) married to a much younger Latina (Sofia Vergara). The third is a gay couple (Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson) with an adopted Vietnamese baby.

Jason Winer is directing the pilot.

O'Neill had already had a long and successful career in TV, movies and on stage when he was cast as Al Bundy on FOX's long-running "Married with Children." Since that role, for which he received a pair of Golden Globe nominations, O'Neill has mostly steered toward dramatic work on the small screen on shows including "Big Apple," "Dragnet," The West Wing" and "John From Cincinnati."
