Donald Sutherland as the patriarch of a wealthy, intelligent, eccentric family? That sounds so crazy it just might work!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Dirty Sexy Money" star has been cast as the family patriarch in CBS' "The Eastmans," about a dysfunctional family of doctors.

The trade says that Sutherland's character is a roguish, but distinguished cardiologist.

Sutherland joins David Wilson Barnes, Saffron Burrows, Gaby Hoffman and Jesse Bradford in the drama.

Most recently seen as Tripp Darling on ABC's not-yet-cancelled-but-probably-not-coming-back "Dirty Sexy Money," Sutherland's other recent TV credits include ABC's "Commander in Chief." On the big screen, the "Klute" star was most recently seen in "Fool's Gold," "Reign Over Me" and "Beerfest."

In other CBS casting news, Joaquim de Almeida ("24") will play the director of an institute of transplant medicine on CBS' "Three Rivers." The medical drama will also star Alex O'Loughlin and Julia Ormond.
