DJ AM, a prominent celebrity DJ, was found dead in his New York apartement this afternoon, according to a story first posted on TMZ.com. He was 36.

The New York Post is reporting that sources indicate drug paraphrenalia was found in the apartment, in SoHo off of Lafayette.

Police found the DJ, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, after having to kick down the door. A friend had tried to visit Goldstein earlier in the day, knocking, with no response. Sources say he hadn't been seen or heard from for several days.

DJ AM last posted to his Twitter account on Aug. 25, with the quote "New york, new york. Big city of dreams, but everything in new york aint always what it seems." It's derived from the song "New York New York" by Grandmaster Flash.

Goldstein and Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker were famously the sole survivors of a plane crash in South Carolina last year. Four people died after an aborted takeoff.

DJ AM had just wrapped shooting eight episodes of a new MTV drug intervention reality show "Gone Too Far" last week. Goldstein often discussed his own drug use in these tapings.
