Charles Gibson retiring as ABC News anchor
Diane Sawyer will become 'World News' anchor in January
Charles Gibson
ABC "World News" anchor Charles Gibson announced on Wednesday (Sept. 2) morning that he'll be retiring at the end of the year.
Diane Sawyer, currently anchoring "Good Morning America," will become the new "World News" anchor starting in January, according to ABC News.
"It has not been an easy decision to make," Gibson emailed the "World News" staff. "This has been my professional home for almost 35 years. And I love this news department, and all who work in it, to the depths of my soul."
Gibson took over the anchor chair in 2006 after Bob Woodruff, only recently named to replace the late Peter Jennings, was seriously injured in Iraq. A veteran of nearly 35 years at ABC, Gibson will continue to occasionally contribute to the network's news content.
Sawyer came to ABC from CBS in 1989. She's co-anchored "Primetime Live," "20/20" and "Good Morning America" for the network. It's apparently obligatory to mention that when she takes the "World News" anchor position and joins CBS' Katie Couric, two of the three network news anchors will be women.
