A number of the male stars in Sylvester Stallone's new action flick "The Expendables" could be considered comeback candidates, so why not keep that theme running for its leading ladies too?

Nu Image/Millennium Films has confirmed that the talented, but, um, zany Brittany Murphy has been cast as the girlfriend of Mickey Rourke's character in the upcoming thriller.  The part calls for Murphy to also sing, something she's done to great effect in the animated Oscar winner "Happy Feet" and on the Paul Oakenfold club hit "Faster Kill Pussycat."

Rourke and Murphy previously worked together in "Sin City."

Stallone latest directorial effort centers on a bunch of mercenaries who attempt to overthrow a South American dictator.  The intriguing cast includes Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Rand Couture, Steve Austin, Eric Roberts and Rourke.  Production begins momentarily in Brazil and will eventually segue to Louisiana.

The talented Murphy has had a truly bizarre career, never living up to the critical or box office promise she showed in hits such as "8 Mile" or "Just Married."  In fact, she hasn't appeared in a studio production since 2006's "Happy Feet" over three years ago.  Her most consistent gig has been voicing the character of Luanne on "King of the Hill."

If you haven't had the opportunity to experience Ms. Murphy's vocal stylings up until now, check out the video for 2006's "Faster Kill Pussycat" below.  It may provide some hints to the actresses allegedly strange behavior.
