Big time directors and some big stars mark this year's 2008 Cannes Film Festival line up as the films in competition were announced this morning.

In what may be a critical showdown of influential filmmakers, directors vying for the coveted Palm d'Or prize including previous winners Ken Loach ("Looking For Eric"), Lars von Trier ("Anticrhrist"), Jane Champion ("Bright Star") and Quentin Tarantino  ("Inglourious Basterds") as well as festival favorites Ang Lee ("Taking Woodstock"), Park Chan-wook ("Thirst") Pedro Almodavar ("Broken Embraces") and Michael Haneke ("The White Ribbon").

Some of the more famous names appearing on screen include Brad Pitt ("Inglourious Basterds") current media darling Demetri Martin ("Taking Woodstock") Emile Hirsch ("Taking Woodstock"), Willem Dafoe ("Antichrist"), Liev Schreiber ("Taking Woodstock") Penelope Cruz ("Broken Embraces"), Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Colin Ferrell and Heath Ledger (all "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus").

Worth noting for historical significance, the winner of the Grand Jury prize at this year's Sundance Film Festival, "Precious: Base on the novel Push by Sapphire" and featuring none other than Mariah Carey herself will screen in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival.

Pixar's "Up" was previously announced as the opening night film.  Variety reveals Sam Raimi's "Drag Me To Hell" will have an out-of-competition midnight screening.

A complete list of the films in competition are listed below.  More details on other films screening at the festival in the Director's Fortnight, Un Certain Regard and Critics Week should be announced on Friday.

    "A Prophet," France, Jacques Audiard

--- at first glance, I thought the director was Jean Jaques Annauld (?), the man who directed THE BEAR and QUEST FOR FIRE. What ever happened to him?
