Box Office: 'The Avengers' makes history with $1 billion worldwide in 19 days
'Dark Shadows' scares up $28.6 million
After suffering through the mistakes of "John Carter," one of the biggest box office bombs in Hollywood history, Walt Disney Studios has received something of a miracle with Marvel Studios' "The Avengers." The Joss Whedon adventure already hold the all-time U.S. opening weekend record and the records continue to fall.
As of today, Disney estimates that "The Avengers" will cross a staggering $1 billion in just 19 days. It also grossed an amazing $103.4 million in its second weekend. That shatters the previous mark set by "Avatar" which found $75.6 million in Dec. 2009. "Avengers" is also the fastest film to reach $300 million after hitting the mark in 9 days. The film's current tally is a staggering $373.1 million.
In a statement Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger noted, "“We’re obviously thrilled with the global success of 'The Avengers.' It’s a fantastic movie and an extraordinary franchise that will continue with more great stories and compelling characters for years to come.”
Earth's Mightiest Heroes should pass $400 million sometime this week. With upcoming releases "Battleship" and "Men in Black 3" polling under expectations, "Avengers" has enough fuel to surpass $550 million. Whether it can pass "Titanic's" no. 2 mark of $600.7 million remains to be seen.
Also debuting this weekend and suffering by being under "The Avengers," ah, shadow was Warner Bros.' "Dark Shadows." The eighth Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaboration found just $28 million in its first three days. Warner Bros. was expecting a $35 million plus debut, but have to hope the fantasy comedy gains traction over the coming weeks.
"Think Like A Man" landed in the third slot with $6.3 million and $81.9 million to date. "The Hunger Games" found $4.4 million in fourth with a satisfying $386.9 million so far. Zac Efron's "The Lucky One" grossed $4.1 million and a cume of $53.7 million.
Friday's new releases includes "Battleship" which has already grossed a somewhat disappointing $215 million overseas. The U.S. is the last market for the Peter Berg action flick.
Box Office actuals are released on Monday.

Just once in this lifetime you'll actually bother to proof read your work.
maxinpains Just once in a lifetime you should able to make this kind of movie before you criticize someone, dumb Arse.
May 13, 2012 at 2:44PM ESTShitegeist Maxinpains: 1) I was criticizing Gregory Ellwood, not the movie, so your comeback makes no sense. 2)If it was a one-off mistake I'd have overlooked it, but seemingly every single Ellwood article contains at least one factual or grammatical error. Any journalist worth his salt knows to check his facts and proof-read his work. Plus the fact that Ellwood is one of the founders of the site - one would think he would make more of an effort to be accurate.

This isn't aintitcool where it's ok to personally go after every writer you dont like. You could and obviously did get this information elsewhere, so why did you bother reading his article? You knew it was an Ellwood article and you entered under the intention of finding something to throw a fit about. I believe they ban people around here for that kind of behavior. Then again, when it comes down to it, you're just another pageview, well 2 or 3 by the time you reply to my comment. So in the end you're just inflating his ticker with your asinine complaints. Most entertainment websites dont employ a copy editor, get over it.
May 13, 2012 at 3:50PM ESTJohn I don't understand. Why is he a d-bag for pointing out a basic fact? Isn't that a pretty basic mistake the writer of the article made? Do not know, do not care who wrote the article, but that seems like a really basic mistake. So Shitegeist is right. What is the problem? That he called the writer sloppy? Well again don't know the writer but that really is a sloppy mistake. So Shitegeist is right.
May 14, 2012 at 5:22AM ESTThis whole "any time someone criticizes someone else they're being unreasonable" (a.k.a. hater) thing is getting old. Do your job. Write the article right and you won't have this problem. Maybe you're being called sloppy because you are. In this case you sure were.

LMAO! No need to read any further, the author lost all credibility right there. John Carter has made $272,219,000 so far, what a bomb ahahahahahhaha. gg nub
JJC Disney said they lost more than 200 million$ on that movie. That happens to be a huge box office bomb in my mind
May 14, 2012 at 2:43AM ESTThe Dude JJC- You do realize they said that the first week it was out, right? No, of course you don't, you just get all your facts from people like the author here. I bet your perception of the world is far from wide.
May 15, 2012 at 2:06AM ESTScott Do you realize how much that movie cost to make, and then how much it actuall made, furthermore the longer it's out the less the studio makes. Superman Returns made over 400 Million worldwide but is generally accepted as being a bomb because of the cost and how long it took to make the movie. John Carter made 272 Million worldwide, but cost 250 million just to produce. pretty basic math tells you that with distributors and theaters needing their take of the ticket sales, that this movie was an epic bomb.
