Beyonce, Lady GaGa lead MTV Video Music Award nominations
Another excuse to continue watching 'Single Ladies' over and over
Beyonce and Lady GaGa
MTV seems to be playing fewer and fewer music videos anymore, but that doesn't mean they won't continue to celebrate killer clips from artists like Beyonce and Lady GaGa.
These two single solo ladies are tied for the most MTV Music Video Awards nominations this year, with nine nods a piece. The categories they share include Video Of The Year, Best Direction and Best Special Effects, though we're a bit confused by the latter for B's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)." Because, frankly, you just can't fake being dance-crazy and mad foxy.
"Paparazzi" by Lady GaGa got five nods as "Poker Face" got four (including Video Of The Year).
The show takes place in New York Sept. 13 and will be broadcast on the cable network.
Britney Spears is runner up with seven Moonmen nominations, including Video Of The Year for "Womanizer." Others competing for that title are Kanye West's "Love Lockdown" and Eminem's "We Made You" -- apt, considering MTV made him.
There are ten tracks up for Breakthrough Video, like Gnarls Barkley's "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" and Chairlift's "Evident Utinsil." Ten other tracks up for the shoulda-coulda-woulda-been retrospective Best Video (That Should Have Won A Moonman) category -- old stuff like U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name," George Michael's "Freedom" and Radiohead's "Karma Police."
But the new, bullsh*tty cross-branding category this year goes to Best Performance In A Pepsi Rock Band Video, for which mere mortals like you and I can compete. Entrants can submit their own "Rock Band" music videos Aug. 8 - Sept. 1 via the PepsiRockBand.com website. We're practicing up on our best "Ace of Spades" here at the HitFix compound.
Fan voting for general categories has already started over at vma.mtv.com.
"I Love College" rapper Asher Roth has now been announced as a performer on the show. As previously announced, Russell Brand is hosting; Green Day, P!nk, Taylor Swift and Muse are performing. Katy Perry, Ne-Yo and Chace Crawford are confirmed presenters.
