Anne Hathaway prepares to 'Get Happy'
'Get Smart' star will do Judy Garland on stage and screen for The Weinsteins
Anne Hathaway
After getting miserable (and earning an Oscar nomination for her troubles) in "Rachel Getting Married," Anne Hathaway is ready to "Get Happy."
The Weinstein Company has recruited Hathaway to star in stage and screen versions of Gerald Clarke's Judy Garland biography.
TWC's announcement offers no timetable for either the theatrical or film adaptations of "Get Happy," nor does it indicate any of the behind-the-scenes talent working on the book, which was first published in 2001.
"We are thrilled to have the brilliantly talented Anne Hathaway portray stage and screen legend Judy Garland. I have worked with Anne on projects in the past and have known her for many years. She will be a true class act in this challenging role," says Harvey Weinstein in a statement. "Gerald Clarke’s biography is a fascinating and comprehensive look at Garland’s life and is particularly outstanding because of its exclusive details from her own writings. Her story is incredible subject matter for both theatre and film and we look forward to bringing it to audiences."
Garland last recei ved biopic treatment with the 2001 telefilm "Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows," which earned Emmy awards for both of its stars, Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard.
Presumably "Get Happy" will give Hathaway the chance to showcase the vocal chops she's hinted at on "Saturday Night Live" and at the Oscars this year.
The "Rachel Getting Married" Oscar nod was the first of Hathaway's career. She's also starred in "The Devil Wears Prada," "Get Smart" and the two "Princess Diaries" films.
