ABC has given a full-season order to "FlashForward," meaning that viewers are now far more likely to see what's actually going to happen on Thursday, April 29, 2010.
The formal pick-up, really a foregone conclusion since the drama's strong premiere three weeks ago, came as ABC also officially announced the back-nine pick-up orders for "Cougar Town," "Modern Family" and "The Middle."
We reported on the three comedy pick-ups last week, so we'll dwell on "FlashForward," which focuses on humanity's struggle to understand a global event in which everybody sees a brief glimpse of their lives six months in the future (04/29/10).
The heavily serialized drama, created by David Goyer and Brandon Braga, got off to an excellent start when its premiere beat a new "Survivor" in the key 18-49 demographic, becoming the first regular program to upset the CBS reality stalwart in the demo since 2004. Two weeks of dropping ratings, both overall and in the demo, have put "FlashForward" behind "Survivor" again, but the show is still comfortably outperforming what "Ugly Betty" did in the time period last season, improving by 1.8 million viewers and 32 percent in the demo.
The "FlashForward" renewal also came on the same morning ABC got good news courtesy of the premiere's DVR numbers. Factoring in DVR totals, "FlashForward" gained 2 million viewers (from 12.5 million to 14 million), more than any other freshman show. It also went up by 0.8 in the demo, from a 4.1 rating to a 4.9 rating.
"FlashForward" features a large ensemble cast including Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Jack Davenport, Sonya Walgar, Brian F. O'Byrne and, if we wait long enough, Dominic Monaghan.
