In what can hardly be seen as a positive sign for its long-term future, "Numb3rs" has seen its season order trimmed by CBS.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS has reduced the sixth season order for "Numb3rs" from 22 episodes down to 16.

It's a move that can only be made from a position of strength, because although "Numb3rs" has been down this season, averaging only a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demo and under 8 million viewers, the series has reliably won its Friday 10 p.m. time period.

The trade notes that while CBS says no decision has been made on the Rob Morrow, David Krumholtz math-driven drama, with "Numb3rs" already in syndication on TNT, the network has less incentive to keep the show around after this season.

CBS has several midseason dramas already in the pipeline, including a pair of Canadian co-productions. "Flashpoint," already a proven Friday performer, has been ordered for a third season, while CBS has yet to set a premiere date for the police union drama "The Bridge."
